Parish Picnic - Sunday, September 17, 2017
A beautiful day for a picnic. Too bad the petting zoo didn't show up. Fortunately a quick run to the dollar store for toys that kept the little ones entertained. Besides they could take the toys home, but the animals would've had to stay. Big thanks to everyone who came out, especially John P, Karl F, Keitha T, and everyone else who contributed to the fun of the day.

The Story of Charles John Bryden
Charles John Bryden was born on January 24, 1896 at Crosby, the son of farmers, Albert and Angelina Bryden. On September 13, 1915 Charlie enlisted with the 41st Regiment, Brockville Rifles and then transferred to the 80th Battalion. On May 20, 1916, Charlie’s unit set sail for Halifax on the SS Baltic, arriving in England on May 27. A few weeks later on July 7, 1916 having been transferred to the 2nd Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force, Charlie’s unit embarked for France. On October 24,1916, he was promoted to Corporal. At the Battle of the Somme, Charlie was killed on November 11, 1916.
In a letter to Charlie’s parents following his death his buddy Carson Bradley wrote, “I went to the trenches with Charles but I was slightly wounded in the fare so had to leave duty and was not in again during the attack but I have gathered some news from the boys who were with him and as far as I can learn he was shot by a sniper while trying to assist a comrade who had his foot blown off by high explosive. Charles was such a good natured and kind fellow that he could not help but do his best to help his comrades. One of his fellows Pte Thom seen that he was buried in the best possible way, of course you know the circumstances did not permit a ceremonial burial but I feel assured that he got a decent burial and better than all he is resting in a perfect place tonight with the Great One who cares for all our fellows out here and we will meet him only that great day when we all meet at the Throne of Joy.”

St. Thomas’ 60th Anniversary Dinner - Saturday, October 29, 2016
On Saturday evening, October 29th we celebrated 60 years as a parish with a dinner celebration at Mino’s Village. During the evening pictures of parish life through the years were projected for all to see. A wonderful new banner celebrating 60 years of St. Thomas as a Parish was unveiled. It was made by Sally Hutson, with assistance from Wendy Kubisheski, Marg Whittaker and Debbie Warren. John Perreault shared reminiscences of two founding members, Doug Mullholland and Don Hall, interspersed with some of his own recollections on the early days of the parish.
The guest speaker for the evening was Michelle Hauser, an award winning writer whose columns appear in the Whig Standard and National Post. In recent years she was Stewardship and Education Co-ordinator for the Diocese. Michelle shared her personal faith journey as a ‘type A’ person who struggled with giving up control as she began her career as a writer. She was ultimately able to focus on using her gifts for writing, trusting in God to guide her.
The formal part of the evening closed with the musical entertainment of St. Thomas’ own infamous ‘The Guys’ singers. Bill McAllister, David Orgill, Gary McCabe, Ed Tennant and John Perreault celebrated 1956 with a selection of popular musical hits from that year and left the crowd craving for more. All in all it was a wonderful cerebration.

They enjoyed a delicious meal of bratwurst, spatzle, red cabbage and sauerkraut, with homemade Black Forest cake for dessert.
Gayle Furr put together a gift bag of fun novelty items which was raffled off. Elaine McCabe was the winner! The $130 that was raised will go towards the parking lot resurfacing fund. An Oktoberfest trivia quiz was played with each table making up a team. There was a ‘three way’ tie, but after a tie-breaker the team at the ‘Bonn’ table was declared the winner.

Thanks to the Social Committee, Margot & Dave Nolan, Bill & Sharon McAllister and John & Judi Perreault for such a fun evening!

Farewell to the Labrecques - August 23, 2015
On August 23 St Thomas’ said thanks and farewell to Mark and Barb Labrecque. Since 1999 they have been deeply involved in the life of the parish. Mark served a number of years as Churchwarden and as an Intercessor. Barb served on parish council, altar guild, banner group and as interim parish secretary. She also coordinated the Advent Tea & Sale, and served as a chalice administrator. Their faithful service was marked with a stone on the Tree of Life and a pot-luck. We wish them well as they head to Calgary to be closer to family. We’ll miss them!

Over the past year Gillian has patiently and enthusiastically challenged the regular choir. The choir has grown and learned from her enthusiastic mentoring. She has been a patient and knowledgeable director, with a great sense of humour, making our practices a lot of fun! Sadly, Gillian’s time with us as our Choir Director is over. Her last Sunday with us was May 31st. At the parish luncheon potluck following the service, Gillian was thanked repeatedly, and told how she will be missed, by all those present. Former parishioner Louise Bark spoke about her cross-Canada train trip. She was asked by Via Rail to evaluate their new rail car designed for people in wheelchairs. Louise, her beautiful guide dog Bruce, and a friend, traveled by train from Ontario to Vancouver, B.C. and back during the fall of 2014. Although Louise wasn’t able to leave her cabin except at stops, she said the food and the beautiful scenery made up for that. She had some wonderful pictures, and good advice for taking photos from a train. She answered lots of questions for the audience.

The songs were all very familiar melodies, and we enjoyed singing along. Music is so good for the soul! |

Seniors Group - May 17, 2013
As usual, there was a lot happening at the Seniors Group on May 17. We were fortunate to have Tom Epp speak about Hospice Kingston. Tom is a passionate advocate for Hospice Kingston, as well as chairman of the board. He described how Hospice provides comfort and support for individuals and families living with a life-limiting illness. We viewed a short video interviewing some Hospice volunteers and clients in the Kingston region. http://www.hospicekingston.ca/ It was also a time to thank Phil and Marion Neatby for their role in the Seniors Group. Along with Don and Betty Boone, and Ken and Marian Gates, they were instrumental in starting the group 5 years ago. They are stepping back from the organizing role but will continue to be involved. There were May birthdays to celebrate as well. Inez Butler is turning 97. She is followed by Marion Larocque who will be 93. Phil Neatby is turning a comparatively young 85. Last but not least, Dave Orgill will join the seniors' ranks with his 65th birthday. |

See more pictures here! Senior's Group - March, 2013
We were treated to a very professional travel experience on Friday. Bob Hales took us with him electronically, as he and Faye traveled in China last year. As you know, Bob is a talented photographer, and also very skilled at putting together Power-Point presentations. There was just the right level of detail, and Bob’s deft personal touches gave it charm and interest.
In addition, we celebrated the 67th Anniversary of Olive and Charlie Jeffs, and we were glad to give Bill Clarke a “little something” to add to his “mad money” when he travels to the Holy Land. In our next gathering, Dave Nolan will talk to us about Habitat for Humanity. Keep the 19th of April open. |
